Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) attacks nerve cells in many parts of the brain resulting in severe memory and attention problems, lack of reasoning ability, disorientation, loss of judgment, and difficulty in performing routine tasks. Gradually these symptoms progress and Alzheimer's disease is now the fourth leading cause of death in adults in the industrial world.

Though the disease affects more than 14 million people in Europe and North America, the exact cause of the disease is unknown. Today, there are few treatments and the available medications tend to alleviate symptoms only temporarily and incompletely. NsGene is developing a clinical EC BiodeliveryTM product, NsG0202, which has the potential not only to treat the symptoms of the disease but also to modify the disease progression and thereby access a market with a large unmet need. An estimated 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. The number of Americans with Alzheimer’s has more than doubled since 1980. The annual costs of Alzheimer's disease to the US society are more than $100 billion.

Finding a treatment that could delay onset by five years could reduce the number of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease by nearly 50 percent after 50 years.

A person with Alzheimer’s disease will live an average of eight years and as many as 20 years or more from the onset of symptoms as estimated by relatives.
