In year 2000 NsGene entered into a collaboration and license agreement with Biogen Idec, regarding the commercialisation of Neublastin. This program was based on NsGene's patented findings that Neublastin can influence the survival and function of peripheral sensory neurons. Neublastin is a member of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors. The molecule is also known as Artemin and Enovin in the scientific literature.
The utility of Neublastin for the treatment of neuropathy and associated pain has been demonstrated in a large number of animal models. Biogen is running several Phase Ib studies with Neublastin for the treatment of peripheral neuropathy and associated pain syndromes, and clinical efficacy will be investigated in Phase II trials in the near future.
In 2010, NsGene and Biogen Idec announced that Biogen Idec acquires the full rights to Neublastin (see press release).
